“文化赋予事物价值”是一种通常的说法,仿佛文化是事物表面的镀层,是附加之物。另一种说法可以对这种过于粗糙的解释加以修正——文化是笼罩事物的“灵韵”。事物处在“灵韵”之中,也就是说它处在一种气氛之中,它不是事物的一部分,而是将事物代入其存在的介质。价值不是介质所赋予的,而是经由介质而传达的。

文化本身包含着历史,并从历史中涌现而出。价值同样包含着历史,并为历史所决定。于是,文化也参与价值的构造。这样一来,文化也成为事物表层之下之物。

所以,我们说:物态本身处在文化之灵韵和文化之结构的交汇处。

The Value of Culture  (The Predator)

Medium and the Constructor

 

“Culture gives value to things” is common saying, as if culture is coated on the surface of the things and is only an attachment. Another way of saying can correct this explanation that is somewhat too rough: “Culture is the ‘Aura’ over things.” Things are in “Aura”, which means that culture is a kind of atmosphere rather than a part of things. It is to build things into the medium in which they exist. Value is not given by the medium, but conveyed through the medium.

Culture itself contains the history, and emerges from history. Value also contains history, and is determined by the history at the same time. Then, culture also participates in the construction of the value. Thus culture also becomes something under the surface of things.

So we say a things status itself sits in the crossover of culture’s rhyme spirit and structures.
